Special Educational Needs
SEND and Inclusion at St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary Academy
Every Child Belongs. Every Child Matters. Every Child Can Flourish.
At St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary Academy, we believe that every child is uniquely created in God's image and deserves to feel valued, included, safe and successful.
We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment where all children can thrive academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. We recognise that children learn in different ways and may need different levels of support at different times during their school journey.
We work closely with children, families, staff and external professionals to ensure that every child receives the support they need to reach their full potential.
Are You Worried About Your Child?
You know your child best.
If you have concerns about your child's:
Learning or progress
Speech, language or communication
Attention, concentration or organisation
Social interaction or friendships
Emotional wellbeing
Behaviour
Sensory needs
Physical development
Independence skills
Please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance.
We believe that early identification and support are essential. Many concerns can be addressed quickly through classroom adaptations and targeted support.
If further support is required, the class teacher may consult with our SENDCo to discuss next steps.
What Happens When Concerns Are Raised?
How Do We Support Children with SEND?
Most support for children with SEND takes place within the classroom through high-quality teaching.
Inclusion in Action
Inclusion is not a place. It is a way of working.
At St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary Academy we strive to remove barriers to learning and participation so that every child can be successful.
Our inclusive practice includes:
-
-Adaptive teaching approaches
-
-The EEF's Five-a-Day principles for SEND
-
-Emotional wellbeing support
-
-Pupil voice
-
-Individual learning plans where appropriate
-
-Collaborative working with families
-
-Partnership with external professionals
-
-Support during key transitions
-
-A commitment to belonging and participation for all
We recognise and celebrate the strengths, talents and individuality of every child.
Working in Partnership with Parents
Parents and carers are central to the success of SEND support.
We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when schools and families work together.
We will:
-
-Listen to your views
-
-Keep you informed
-
-Involve you in decision-making
-
-Review progress regularly
-
-Celebrate successes together
We encourage parents to contact us whenever they have questions or concerns.
Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
Some children with more significant or complex needs may require support beyond that ordinarily available through school resources.
In these circumstances, an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment may be considered.
The decision to request an assessment is made collaboratively and will involve discussion with parents, school staff and, where appropriate, external professionals.
Having an EHCP is not a requirement for receiving SEND support in school.
Many children make excellent progress through SEND Support without requiring an EHCP.
Supporting Transition
Transitions can be exciting but can also create uncertainty for some children.
We work carefully to support:
-
-Starting school in Reception
-
-Moving between year groups
-
-Mid-year admissions
-
-Transition to secondary school
-Additional transition support may include:
-
-Extra visits
-
-Visual supports
-
-Social stories
-
-Transition meetings
-
-Enhanced information sharing
